Launching The D Word during Demystifying Death Week, May 2025
by Gillian Robertson, SICA Membership Secretary, Falkirk.
As some of you may know, I have been developing The D Word for some time, and I realised that the ideal opportunity to launch my social enterprise was during Demystifying Death Week in May this year.
Good idea – better to have thought about it a good few weeks beforehand!! But, having looked at the events scheduled for DDW, listed on the Good Life Good Death, Good Grief website it was the obvious opportunity, plus, the significance of the only date I had available: 05/05/2025 only confirmed this!
The D Word (in case you’re wondering!) is a resource designed to be delivered by experienced Celebrants to groups of any age and stage who would benefit from being supported to become familiar with what to expect when someone close dies.
With a Start-Up grant awarded by The Firstport of Call for Social Enterprise – Firstport and with enthusiastic support and interest from other SICA Celebrants: Aileen Palmer, Gaynor Hogg, Chris Lerpinière and Laura Throssell, we are spreading The D Word, and planning to work with schools and community groups in our local areas.
Visits to Stirlingshire Crematorium, and Bishopbriggs Crematorium, plus Zetland Church, Muiravonside and Camelon Cemeteries have proved to be very valuable with different groups.
The support and interest of Kevin Mitchell and his team at Central Funeral Services, have allowed The D Word groups in Falkirk to visit a Funeral Parlour and to learn more about the role of a Funeral Director.
So, launched on Zoom as part of DDW 2025, The D Word is well under way! Very grateful thanks to all who joined me for the launch, and for your continued interest and support!

Very grateful thanks to Michael Hannah for his support and interest (and listening!!).
