Reflections on the Clan Jardine Gathering at Applegarth Church

by Aileen Palmer, SICA Member and Community Celebrant, Dumfries and Galloway

31st May 2026

What a truly remarkable day it was, nestled amongst the rolling hills of Dumfriesshire, at the end of May, for the Clan Jardine Gathering at Applegarth Church.

As a local celebrant and community minister in training, I had the distinct honour of holding the space at this special occasion, and I am still filled with gratitude for the warmth and connection that permeated the air between people of different ages, nationalities and backgrounds. The message of shared history, community, kindness and compassion resounded in the walls of this beautiful and recently saved, ancient building.

From the moment I arrived, the sun greeted me with its radiant glow, setting a joyful tone for the day. The sound of quiet organ music welcomed guests as they mingled – family, friends, and neighbours – each person contributing to the vibrant tapestry of community and clan. Seeing familiar faces recognising one another, alongside new ones who were meeting for the first time, was a heartwarming reminder of the diverse connections that make up the local community and Clan Jardine.

As I stood before the assembled congregation, I felt the weight of history and the joy of present moment. The opening words emphasised that while today was a celebration for Clan Jardine, the story of Applegarth belongs to many. We are all interconnected, shaped by the experiences and memories gathered in this sacred space. This acknowledgment of our shared heritage set the stage for a service rich in meaning.

Throughout the ceremony, amongst the uplifting singing of well known hymns,  heartfelt and poignant prayers and beautiful flute recital from Lilly all the way from America, what rang loudly, was the importance of connection, curiosity, acceptance, and community. It was important to express how heritage is not merely about preserving the past; it is about carrying forward values like kindness, support, and hospitality.

The continued restoration of Applegarth Church itself symbolises renewal, illustrating that we will always need places of refuge and sanctuary, where community can thrive with care and dedication.

One of the most moving moments came during the reflection on the essence of a clan. Through the gentle reminder that a clan is more than simply ancestry and lineage passed from one generation to another – it embodies the understanding that we belong to one another in ways that transcend differences. It was clear that this central theme resonated deeply, encouraging us to recognise that we share far more in common than what divides us.

It was wonderful to share some of the words from Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s 1932 novel, Sunset Song,

“Each dawn comes to us like an old Celtic blessing, drifting over the hills with a whisper of ancient wisdom. In the soft light, we waken not only our bodies but the soul‑fire carried deep within – an ember handed down through generations, glowing with memory and mystery.

As we breathe, the Spirit moves through us like a gentle breeze across heathered ground, reminding us that we belong to something older, kinder, and wider than ourselves.

May this stillness help us tend that inner flame with reverence, letting it rise, warm, and guide us, as the ancestors once trusted the first light to guide their steps across the day.”

As the service concluded, the atmosphere outside transformed into a lively celebration. Children played on the grass, laughter filled the air, and the community gathered around tables laden with delicious food. It was a beautiful sight to behold – a manifestation of the connections we had begun to nurtured during our ceremony and now flourishing in the sunlight.

Being part of this gathering was not just a role for me; it was a gift. The sense of community reminded me of the profound impact we can have on one another’s lives. Each smile shared, each story exchanged, and each hand held reinforces the belief that together, we can create a supportive environment for all.

As I departed from Applegarth, I felt a renewed sense of hope and connection. The Clan Jardine Gathering joining with local rural voices, served as a beautiful reminder that in a world often marked by division, we have the power to foster love, support, and understanding. I hope all in attendance will carry the spirit of this day with us, nurturing our connections and ensuring that the essence of community continues to thrive for generations to come.

Together, we are weaving a story of shared humanity, one that will echo through the future.

Celebrating the human condition means acknowledging that we all experience challenges, joys, and transformations, and by sharing our stories, we foster empathy and understanding. Community acts as a vital support system, where mutual support and collective wisdom empower individuals and enrich our lives. Embracing diversity allows us to see differences not as barriers but as opportunities for growth, while active listening creates spaces where everyone feels valued. Small acts of kindness, exemplified by community role models, remind us of the profound impact we can have on one another. Creating inclusive environments is essential for ensuring everyone feels they belong, and celebrating our heritage strengthens our identity.

As we envision a hopeful future built on connection and collaboration, let us commit to taking meaningful actions in our daily lives to foster this spirit. Ultimately, our shared humanity is our greatest strength, and by coming together, we can create a more compassionate world where each individual’s contribution matters.
